On Friday morning career firefighter Robert E. Byrnes, Jr. was on duty at Prospect firehouse when he overheard Bergenfield PD requesting medics and an AED on an expedite to Bergenfield High School.
Without hesitation, Bob grabbed an AED off of Engine 745 and bolted across the street to the high school. He made his way to second floor and found Bergenfield PD officers performing CPR on a 15 year old female. Bob set-up the AED and administered one shock to the patient. She immediately began to a normal heart rythum.
Members of the Bergenfield Ambulance Corps. arrived and removed the patient to Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck.
The officers and members of the Bergenfield Fire Department would like to commend Robert E. Byrnes, Jr. for his quick action that saved the life of a young girl.
The next meeting of the Mid-Bergen Mutual Aid Association will be held on Wednesday evening January 27th, 2010 in Bogota. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at Engine Company # 2 on Central Avenue in Bogota.
A Fire Protection ICS class has been scheduled starting in January 2010 and running on Tuesdays and Thursdays until June 2010 at Bergen Community College. The class will run from 6pm to 9:30pm and most likely be at the Ciarco Center Campus in Hackensack. The Fire Protection ICS program is the first step in obtaining a license to inspect and enforce the Uniform Construction Code. This program has not been offered in Bergen County for many years and until now has meant students must travel greater distances to other community colleges.
The program is open to any person wishing to learn how the fire protection subcode regulates new construction and renovations of existing buildings. There is no prerequisite coursework required for this level of licensing. Persons already engaged in enforcement of the Uniform Fire Code should strongly consider this step forward to expand their knowledge and licensing to include new career opportunities in construction code enforcement. Architects and other design professionals who seek to enrich themselves and gain a better understanding of fire protection systems are welcome and encouraged, along with anyone else interested in building codes and fire protection systems.
The course will be based on the 2009 editions of the International Building, Fire, Mechanical, and Fuel Gas Codes along with the 2007 Editions of the sprinkler and alarm standards from NFPA which are presently proposed for adoption into the NJ Uniform Construction Code. Coursework will include building code topics such as height & area, types of construction, hazardous materials, means of egress, & fire rated construction. Mechanical topics such as hazardous exhaust, ventilation, and appliance venting will also be covered. Fire protection systems including alarms, fire pumps, sprinklers, kitchen exhaust, smoke control, and chemical suppression systems will be explored in detail including code requirements, design considerations, and acceptance testing.
Registrations will open in late December through Bergen Community College - Division of Continuing Education. Interested persons may email below and will receive direct notification when class registration begins. Don't miss a chance to advance yourself through this opportunity! Any questions or interested persons may contact David Phelan via email at dphelan@bergenfieldfd.org
The 2009 pump test season is now coming to a close. With the onset of winter and the colder months many fire departments are holding off on their annual pump tests.
TFS is still able to provide pump tests in colder weather. NFPA 1911 allows for tests to be done when the ambiant air temperature is zero degrees Fahrenheit. Should your FD need a pump test during the winter call us at 201-384-4780. You may also fax us at 201-384-4965.
After a few months of awaiting test results and anticipating the arrival of certificates, our department is proud to announce that we have seven new firefighters. An endeavor that began in early September 2009 finally culminated on February 22nd with the presentation of certificates from the State. Perhaps more significant to the recruits was the achievement of receiving their "yellow helmet". Wearing this colo helmet is a symbol that these folks are now firefighters and no longer trainees. This change of gear is a proud moment for the individual student. It is also a proud time for Namozine as well since all of our students were succesful at completing the academy. We are proud of the 100% pass rate, but we are even more proud of the efforts and dedication shown by these folks.
Congratulations

Saturday night February 13th the fire department was dispatched to plaza 141 Laundromat for a dryer fire. Upon arrival of fire units the fire was knocked down with a fire extinguisher. The crew from 53 and ladder 58 checked for extension and vented the building. The fire was contained to the clothes and the dryer.
As the lakes and waterways are frozen solid it is time to train on the ice so when the spring thaw come firefighters will be at the ready. The Budd Lake Fire Department did just that on a cold and damp Sunday drilling on the ice rescue sled and life ring as well as cutting through the ice with chain saws and ice augers. By putting the firefighters in the water as victims they get a sense of the real thing and the realization that if someone goes through the ice there will be open water. The crew took turns being rescuer and victim for abought 3 hours and then back to the fire house for much needed warm refreshments.
